Apple Watch Won’t Pair: First Steps

If Apple Watch won’t pair and you don’t know why, try these simple steps first:

  • Make sure you haven’t accidentally turned on Airplane mode . This turns off Bluetooth automatically. Also, the devices must be close to each other.
  • Switch the Bluetooth on the iPhone or iPad off and on again. To do this, swipe down from the top and tap on “Bluetooth”.
  • If the connection is still not established, switch the Bluetooth on the Apple Watch off and on again. A swipe from top to bottom is also sufficient for this. It can often help if you restart both devices.
  • Check if your iPhone needs important updates .
  • Once your iPhone is up to date, open the Watch app and navigate to My Watch > General > Software Update to update the watch as well.
  • Alternatively, you can also update your watch directly by going to “Settings” > “General” > “Software update” in the watch – watchOS 6 or higher is required for this.

Unpair Apple Watch and then pair it again

In the case of stubborn problems when connecting iOS devices, it can usually help to unpair the devices and then set them up again. Since you are deleting the content and settings in the process, you should first create a backup of the Apple Watch.

  1. Open Settings on the Apple Watch .
  2. Navigate to General > Reset > Erase Settings & Content.
  3. Then take your iPhone or iPad and open the Watch app.
  4. Go to My Watch and tap your Apple Watch at the top.
  5. After that, tap on the orange i icon next to Apple Watch.
  6. Select “Unpair Apple Watch” and confirm the prompt.
  7. After the devices are unpaired and the watch shuts down, turn on the Apple Watch and pair the devices again.
  8. If you still can’t connect, you should contact Apple Support for more help.
