Seemingly out of nowhere, The Lord of the Rings is hot again. Amazon has a new TV series, Electronic Arts and Warner Bros. working on new titles and now an indie developer can get to work with the IP.

The result is a title set in the 4th Age of Middle-Earth, which begins right after the War of the Ring. The worst-case scenario may have been averted, but peace has certainly not yet returned to Middle-Earth. The creatures that once gathered under Sauron are now scattered and can crop up anywhere. However, that doesn’t stop the dwarves from finally taking back the Mines of Moria.

You probably guessed it, but this is your job, although luckily you don’t have to do it alone. Grab up to four friends and explore together in a procedurally constructed world where you must dig for resources to build and fortify a base. But don’t go too fast, because in the silence of the mine, sound travels far and too much noise can attract unwanted guests. In addition, you also have to do other things, such as feeding your males.

Return to Moria was revealed during the Epic Games Showcase and as you can probably tell from that, it will be released exclusively through that storefront. When exactly is not clear yet, but the planning is currently that this will be sometime in the spring of next year.

“We are beyond excited to return to Khazad-dûm,” said Middle-Earth’s Fredrica Drotos. “Thanks to our friends at North Beach Games and Free Range Games, we can dive deep into the Misty Mountains together around this time next year. We hope you will join us.”

“We at Free Range Games are extremely excited to finally unveil The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria,” added Free Range CEO Chris Scholz. JRR Tolkien and all of his Middle-Earth creations are close to our hearts and this project presents a great opportunity to create new experiences from one of the greatest stories ever written. We pour passion into the game to make it an unforgettable experience.”
