News from NAS manufacturer Synology. They are once again increasing their product portfolio. This time it’s the turn of a new 5-bay NAS for the Plus series, the DS1522+. As in some other models, Synology now also uses a Ryzen CPU for this model.

A dual-core processor (4 threads) with a clock rate of 2.6 GHz works in Synology’s DS1522+ with the Ryzen R1600 – in boost it is up to 3.1 GHz. There is also 8 GB of RAM (DDR4 ECC SODIMM), which can officially be increased to up to 32 GB.

There is space for 3.5″ or 2.5″ drives in the five hard disk slots. These are hot-swappable. Two M.2 2280 NVMe SSDs also fit into the case. These can be used as an SSD cache, for example. According to Synology, up to 736/796 MB/s sequential read and write throughput is possible.

On the back: 4 Gigabit Ethernet ports. 10GbE can be retrofitted as an option. Another 10 drives can be retrofitted using the 2 expansion units DX517, so that a total of 15 drives are possible. Two eSATA connections are installed for this purpose. There are also two USB 3.2 Gen 1.

As usual, apart from the hardware specifications, there is the usual (software) overall package with the DiskStation Manager (DSM). With Synology Photos, Synology Drive or the Surveillance Station, there is a wide range of applications available for various purposes. The latter offers the possibility of connecting up to 40 IP cameras to the DS1522+. More can be covered thanks to virtual machines or Docker support.

The cost of the new DS1522+ is just under 770 euros (645 euros plus VAT).
